But many women are worried about whether it’s safe to eat seafood during pregnancy. The truth is, there are pros and cons to eating seafood while pregnant. Seafood can be great to eat while pregnant because of the nutrients that it can provide. Protein, zinc and iron are essential to a baby’s development, and many seafood items are high in these nutrients. On the flip side, seafood can also be high in mercury. Eating too much mercury while pregnant can cause mercury to get into the bloodstream. If this happens, damage to the baby’s nervous system can occur.
It is recommended by both the FDA and the EPA that pregnant women eat eight to twelve ounces of seafood on a weekly basis that is high in omega-3 fatty acids and low in mercury.
