What is the best seafood to eat while pregnant?

Seafood is delicious – we’re guessing you agree with us since you’re taking the time to read this post (Thank you for reading, by the way!). But many women are worried about whether it’s safe to eat seafood during pregnancy. The truth is, there are pros and cons to eating seafood while pregnant. But if you know what those are, and which types of seafood are healthy to eat, you can continue to enjoy some of your favorite seafood dishes while aiding your baby’s development at the same time!

Seafood can be great to eat while pregnant because of the nutrients that it can provide. Protein, zinc and iron are essential to a baby’s development, and many seafood items are high in these nutrients. On the flip side, seafood can also be high in mercury. Eating too much mercury while pregnant can cause mercury to get into the bloodstream. If this happens, damage to the baby’s nervous system can occur.

It is recommended by both the FDA and the EPA that pregnant women eat eight to twelve ounces of seafood on a weekly basis that is high in omega-3 fatty acids and low in mercury. Seafood that is safe to eat while pregnant includes salmon, shrimp, tilapia, anchovies, and much more. For a complete list of types of seafood that are safe to eat while pregnant, click here.
